Aira.IO, based in San Diego, is an emerging startup focused on developing technology and services that allow blind and low-vision individuals greater independence in performing a myriad of daily activities - ranging from navigating city streets and using a menu to order meals at restaurants, to recognizing faces in a crowd. In doing so, Aira provides personalized assistance from a network of certified Agents, plus family and friends. Agents use a real-time interactive cloud-based dashboard built purposely to process live data streams from cameras, GPS, and other sensor systems from wearable platforms such as Google Glass and Vuzix.
Launched in 2014, Aira began as an idea between Suman Kanuganti and Yuja Chang, both UCSD alums. Suman (Founder/ CEO) and Yuja (Co-founder/ VP of Product) have used their drive and innovation, in addition to resources and connections forged at UCSD and elsewhere, to position Aira as one of the fastest rising companies in assistive technology for the visually impaired. Of particular assistance to Aira in its beginning stages has been the UCSD Rady School of Management's StartR program, which helps Rady MBA students and alumni create profitable companies based on their innovative ideas.
Meego provides the most simple method for protecting your belongings in public spaces. Our motion-activated alarm adheres to whatever a user wants to monitor and will sound a loud alarm and notify the user's smartphone if someone else moves it from its original position. Meego aims to deter theft using a simple device, unlike bulky laptop cable locks or expensive data retrieval software. We have been hard at work to complete our third-iteration prototype and will begin beta testing with UCSD students in May 2015, since our main customer segments are students and on-the-go professionals. We will also be launching a Kickstarter campaign during the summer of 2015. We have received a great amount of support from the Moxie Center, Von Liebig Center, Rady MystartupXX program, and the Gordon Center for Engineering Leadership to achieve our milestones thus far.
